What is Title I?
Every Student Succeeds Act
Title I is a federally funded program which provides supplemental funds to schools to assist eligible students to meet their educational goals. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the nation’s education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. Indian Prairie School District #204’s Title I program focuses on early intervention at the preschool, and elementary supplemental programs in the areas of reading, math, student engagement, 21 Century skills and social-emotional learning.
The previous version of the law, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, shined a light on where students were making progress and where they needed additional support, regardless of race, income, zip code, disability, home language, or background. The new law (ESSA) builds on key areas of progress in recent years, made possible by the efforts of educators, communities, parents, and students across the country.
The majority of the law does not take effect until 2017-18. Over the course of the upcoming 2016-17 school year, districts will receive guidance as how this new law impacts Title I and other federal grant programs. How are the funds used?
Targeted Assistance Programs may only support students who are at risk of not meeting their educational goals as measured by district and state assessments. Title I is not a standalone program, but is coordinated with other district, state and federal programs to drive improved achievement in the schools. Title I funds provide additional student, teacher and parent resources in our schools and extensive professional development for teachers. How can you get involved?
School, family and community partnerships can take many forms. In our district, we value and encourage parental involvement at all levels of participation. Below is Joyce Epstein’s “Six Types of Parent Involvement Model” from Johns Hopkins University, which outlines what meaningful parental involvement looks like.
Helping families to develop home environments that support learning.
Providing information and designing more effective forms of communications between school and home.

Providing information and ideas to parents about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculum-related activities.

Including parents in school decisions, and developing parent leaders and representatives.
6. COLLABORATING WITH COMMUNITY
Identifying and integrating resources and services from the community to strengthen school programs and family.
